Overview
A registered marriage contract is the first document of your life together. Your residence permit, your children's registration and the recognition of your marriage in the other spouse's country all depend on it. We go with you from preparing the documents to signing at the Foreign Marriages Office of the Ministry of Justice (وزارة العدل), and we arrange the certificate of no impediment (شهادة عدم الممانعة), the translations and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs legalisation (تصديق).
This service is for you if you are:
- An Egyptian planning to marry a foreigner — or the foreign partner of an Egyptian.
- Two foreigners who want to register your marriage in Egypt.
- A family member of either partner who wants to understand the process before it starts.
Basic conditions
- Both partners attend in person, or through someone they appoint by power of attorney (توكيل).
- The foreign partner's stay in Egypt is legal.
- The foreign partner's embassy issues a certificate of no impediment to marriage.
- A premarital medical examination is carried out.
- Foreign Marriages Office (of the Ministry of Justice)
Documents usually requested
- A valid passport for the foreign partner, and the Egyptian partner's national ID card.
- The certificate of no impediment from the embassy, translated and legalised.
- Proof of the foreign partner's legal residence.
- The medical examination result.
- Recent passport photos.
- Proof of previous marital status, if any (divorce or death).
This list is a guide only. The documents you need depend on your nationality, your religion and the country that issued your documents, and they can change by decision of the competent authority. We give you your final list once we have reviewed your documents.
How your file moves forward
- First, we find out what the foreign partner's nationality requires.
- We obtain the certificate of no impediment, and have the documents translated and legalised.
- We complete the medical examination and the remaining documents.
- We book the registration appointment at the Ministry of Justice, and go with you.
- You receive your contract, and we explain how to legalise it, or how to apply for residence afterwards.
Questions about this service
Do we both have to be there?
Both partners must attend, or someone they appoint by power of attorney. We tell you when a power of attorney is enough, and which wording is accepted.
The foreign partner doesn't have a residence permit right now. Do we have to stop?
Legal residence is a basic condition. We review their situation and explain the options before we start the registration.
Will our contract be recognised in the foreign spouse's country?
The contract usually needs extra legalisations, and these vary from country to country. We tell you exactly what your country requires.
How long will it take?
It depends on the nationality, and on how quickly the certificate of no impediment is issued. Once we have reviewed your documents, we give you a realistic estimate — not a promise.
